Denim that won’t break the bank…

Are you still feeling the pinch after Christmas? Do you feel that your wardrobe needs an injection of fresh denim for Spring?

If you’ve nodded twice, then this is the blog post for you. Whether you are a ‘Dungas Diva’, a ‘Skinnies Stalwart’ or prefer a more relaxed boyfriend style of jeans, Matalan has something for everyone in their denim collection and nothing is over £20!

These dungarees were the most exciting discovery for me. I have experimented with dungarees in the past, but ended up selling the pairs I owned because the fit was a little too loose and I ended up feeling like I ought to be up a ladder with a paintbrush in my hand.  I still want to feel feminine and a little bit sassy when I put on a pair of dungarees and because these are slightly more fitted, they allow me to feel just that.

The denim is really soft and has a good amount of stretch making them extremely comfortable to wear, and the great thing about dungarees is that you can adjust the straps depending on the length of your body.

I have paired them with this red top. (Matalan, £8) I really love the little frill detail on the shoulder, adding just the right amount of femininity against the constructed denim. (I also added the little heart brooch.)

If dungarees feel a bit Blue Peter for you, (I think they divide opinion as much as white boots!) I also tried these high waisted skinnies with lace up hems. One thing I have learnt recently is that anything high waisted elongates the pins, so if, like me, you are a modest height, then high waisters are your friend. The denim is incredibly soft with power stretch and an easy single button fastening and I think they are great value for £18. I have paired them with my Vans and this ‘Merci Beaucoup’ Breton top. Unfortunately the top has since sold out but they do have this one which is lovely and great value for £9. Matalan also have a pair of similar pumps for £10 which I have linked below.

If you prefer a more relaxed style of jeans these RILEY boyfriend jeans are great. They have sold out of the dark wash but they have them in this lovely mid-blue. They were a little long for me (of course!) so I have rolled them up, but I would suggest cutting them to get the desired length and then putting them on a quick wash. It’s the easiest and quickest way to fray the bottom of your jeans. If you aren’t keen on frayed hems and prefer to roll, I would still chop off the excess before you turn them up so that you don’t get that bulky roll as I have below. I am wearing them with this lovely candy stripe shirt (£14) and heels but they would look great with boots or trainers.

There are plenty of gems to be found at Matalan, here are a few of my favourite finds.

  1. Striped Knitted Hoodie £20 / 2. Macrame Hanging Plant £6 / 3. Faux Cheese Plant £25 / 4. Spot Wrap Skirt £14 / 5. Desk Lamp Was £70 now £25 / 6. Canvas Pumps £10 / 7. Tropical Slides £10 / 8. Black Pointed Pumps £12 / 9. Macrame Wall Hanging £12

Just a little word of caution. Matalan’s bargainous gems sell out VERY quickly!

*Sizing info – I am wearing a size 8 in all denim and am usually a size 6/8 in bottoms*

Happy Shopping and thanks for reading.

  1. Love the dungarees and the boyfriends on you! I always feel slightly like a clown when I wear my baggy dungarees – this is definitely more flattering!

I felt exactly the same in my looser fit ones. All about the bum I think, if that’s a bit more like a jeans fit then you still feel a bit glam…

Thank you! The Sunglasses are YSL and yes aren’t they comfy? The denim is so soft, I think I will be wearing them a lot this summer xx
