You know that feeling when you see an item of clothing and it speaks to you. It says, “well hello there, Chloe, I was made for you.’ For me that piece of clothing could be designer or high street, there’s just something about it and you just have to scratch the itch. Well, when I saw this dress in H&M I fell in love with everything about it. A little Chloe, a little Ossie Clark, and little Miu Miu, all rolled into one, with the bargain price tag of £29.99. Having just done a big wardrobe detox, I know that one of my ‘weakness areas’ in the past has been dresses. I splurged on dresses for occasions and many of them have hung in my wardrobe unworn for the past few years. In fairness, those splurges were in the days when I was attending lots of friends weddings, christenings and parties, so they did get worn, but now that I have reached that age where those occasions have dried up, I would rather splurge on everyday items like trainers or a biker jacket. Things I know I will wear again and again. So when a dress like this comes along, with a designer look but a high street price tag, I think it’s ok to scratch the itch.
I don’t know if I will keep it, but I thought I would shoot it to share with you, in case anyone reading has a christening or occasion to wear it coming up.
I am wearing a size 8 and have paired it with my Isabel Marant heels and YSL clutch. I always think you can disguise high street by adding designer pieces like shoes or bags. I would sling a smart black coat over my shoulders to keep warm and if you are comfortable wearing tights, I would opt for the barely there ones that Kate Middleton allegedly wears.

A follower asked me this week to write a post on what to wear to a christening. This is probably the kind of look I would go for. Otherwise, I would opt for smart trousers, with a lace blouse and a smart coat with heels. I am not sure why, but every time I have been to a christening I have wanted to wear soft, muted colours and tend to shy away from black. Here are three looks to give you ideas.
Grey Cable Knit Jumper (sale) + Tulle Skirt (Sale) + Silver heels
Or you could opt for smart trousers, a pretty blouse or knit and a smart coat – something like this.
Frill Merino Knit + Cropped Trousers (sale) + Silver heels (as above)
Or if you wanted to wear dark colours, opt for a feminine blouse on top and heels to keep it classic and feminine.
Frill blouse + Tux Trousers + Heels
The above outfit has two items which I would consider ‘forever buys’. The Tux trousers from Me+Em are absolutely beautiful. The quality and design are second to none and they are a classic shape that you will wear for years. Here they are on, when I tried them on in Me+Em. These Isabel Marant Poppy heels
are the most comfortable pair of heels I own and I always opt for these when I want to dress up an outfit. They are currently 30% off at Mytheresa with another 20% off at checkout. A great investment if you are size 5 or 6 (all they have left)
So if you are off to a christening soon, then hopefully this has sparked a few ideas of what to wear. (Hopefully using existing items you have in your wardrobe, or just updating with an inexpensive item.

Hi just want to say several of your links are incorrect
Fixed! Thank you so much for letting me know Sarah x
Oh NO! Thank you, checking them now… xx
Thank you Chloe, I might go for the grey suit look as I have one just like the one above, but then again that H&M dress is stunning. I really appreciate your kind response and think you are just ace. Louise xx
Keep that Dress!
It’s absolutely gorgeous.
That dress is lovely on you. I cannot do short dresses – it would be perfect if longer! Your red top in the Me&Em pic is gorgeous – where is it from?
Yes it’s quite short. And not terribly forgiving either. That’s also Me + Em that red jumper xx
I love those black trousers. The shape is really flattering, really chic. Lorraine x
Hi Chloe,
Wonderful blog/instagram! I was wondering how do Isabel marant shoes fit? I’m a classic 38 in prada miu miu etc or basic 5 in UK from the few I’ve bought but didn’t know what the fit of Isabel is like? I’ve been looking at a pair of 38s but given she’s French is the sizing French? Thanks so much for your help!
I’m a true size 38 and all the pairs I own have been a perfect fit (size 38) Clothes, not so much! They tend to come up small, but the shoes are true to size…x
